MEDIA BLITZ - Special
By John Molori
AM 1510 continues to rebuild its lineup
WWZN AM 1510 The Zone continues to add both new and recognized talent to its on-air roster. The station will bring Pete Brock and Tim Fox to its airwaves starting Tuesday, March 16. The pair of former Patriots will cohost a weekly show (7-9:00 p.m.) called “Pro’s on Pro’s.”
Says AM 1510 general manager Mike Winn, “Pete and Tim do not want to involve TV personalities or writers, only former pro athletes. It will obviously have a football feel to it, but I really believe that football is becoming a 12-month sport in Boston just like baseball.”
Brock is a part of 104.1 FM WBCN’s Patriots pregame and postgame programming. He has also filled in for Gino Cappelletti on WBCN’s Patriots’ game broadcasts alongside Gil Santos. Fox is a Boston media veteran, having appeared on WBZ-TV and Radio, NECN, AM 1510 and many other outlets. The duo brings needed name recognition to The Zone.
AM 1510 has also added some thunder to its Sunday lineup. “Weekend Thunder” will be hosted by Bob Mackinnon, best known locally for his work at WBIX Radio. The program will serve as the pregame fare for WWZN’s NASCAR coverage (one hour before each race) and will debut on March 14.
Winn, who has subordinated his slot as cohost of AM 1510’s “Diehards” show to focus on his GM duties, says that more programming additions are still to come.
While AM 1510 has miles to go before thinking about challenging Sportsradio 850 WEEI’s stronghold on the Boston sports radio scene, recent developments show a renewed local programming commitment. Time will tell if this commitment results in necessary ratings and revenue.
